GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a powerful, open-source image editing software designed for tasks such as photo retouching, image composition, and image authoring. With a customizable interface and a wide range of tools, GIMP caters to both beginners and advanced users. It supports various file formats and offers features like layers, filters, and plugins, making it a versatile alternative to commercial software. Whether for professional or personal projects, GIMP provides the tools needed for creative expression.

Features & Highlights

  • Comprehensive Image Editing Tools: GIMP offers a wide array of tools for photo manipulation, including advanced features like layers, masks, and filters. For instance, when I needed to enhance a family photo, I utilized the layer feature to adjust brightness and contrast without altering the original image.
  • Customizable Interface: The interface can be tailored to fit your workflow, allowing you to arrange tools and panels according to your preferences. I often rearrange my toolbox to keep my most-used features at my fingertips, making my editing process smoother and more efficient.
  • Extensive Plugin Support: GIMP supports a variety of plugins that extend its functionality. I recently installed a plugin that allows for seamless integration with my favorite stock photo site, making it easy to import images directly into my projects without leaving the app.
  • Open Source and Free: GIMP is completely free to use, which is a significant advantage for those on a budget. I’ve saved hundreds of dollars compared to other software subscriptions, all while accessing professional-grade tools.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: GIMP is available on multiple operating systems, including Windows, macOS, and Linux. This feature is particularly useful for me as I often switch between my laptop and desktop, ensuring I can continue my projects seamlessly.

Real Experience Using "GIMP"

Application Scenarios

As a freelance graphic designer, I often find myself in need of a reliable image editing tool. GIMP has become my go-to application for various projects, from creating social media graphics to retouching client photos. One memorable instance was when I was tasked with designing a promotional flyer for a local event. I used GIMP to combine multiple images, apply text overlays, and adjust colors to create a visually appealing layout that met my client's vision. The flexibility of GIMP allowed me to experiment with different designs until I found the perfect one.

User Experience

The user interface of GIMP is quite intuitive, especially for those familiar with other graphic design software. Upon launching the app, I was greeted with a clean workspace that felt familiar yet unique. The workflow is straightforward; I can easily access tools from the toolbox and navigate through menus without feeling overwhelmed. Performance-wise, GIMP runs smoothly on my mid-range laptop, even when handling large files. I appreciate the responsiveness of the app, which allows me to focus on my creative process without interruptions. Overall, my experience with GIMP has been overwhelmingly positive, as it combines powerful features with a user-friendly interface.

Pricing

One of the most appealing aspects of GIMP is that it is completely free to use. There are no hidden fees or subscription models, which is a breath of fresh air in a market saturated with costly software. This accessibility allows anyone, from hobbyists to professionals, to take advantage of its robust features without financial strain. I’ve been able to invest my resources into other aspects of my business, knowing that I have a top-tier editing tool at my disposal without the burden of a monthly bill.

Updates & Support

GIMP is regularly updated, with new features and bug fixes being rolled out to enhance user experience. The community surrounding GIMP is incredibly active, providing a wealth of resources, including tutorials and forums for troubleshooting. I’ve found the official GIMP website to be a valuable resource for learning new techniques and staying updated on the latest developments. While direct customer support is limited, the community-driven support often fills that gap effectively, making it easy to find solutions to any issues I encounter.

Security & Privacy Review

When it comes to security and privacy, GIMP stands out as a trustworthy option for American users. The application is available for download from official sources, such as the GIMP website, ensuring that users are getting a legitimate version free from malware. There are no registration requirements or personal data collection, which is a significant plus for those concerned about privacy. GIMP does not include ads or tracking behavior, allowing me to focus solely on my creative work without distractions. This commitment to user privacy makes GIMP a reliable choice for anyone looking to edit images without compromising their personal information.

I love Gimp. I've been using the desktop version for over 15 years. I appreciate that an app version is available, but this is so poorly executed. It's literally just an emulation of the desktop software. If you're running on a large tablet it might be okay, but it's completely useless on a phone due to scaling. I can't see the image preview when editing settings, and I can't sélect multiple layers. Overall a waste of time.

I love Gimp and have used the PC version for well over a decade. So I just dove into buying this app with zero hesitation. Should have read the reviews first as it was a waste of money. This is not at all optimized for mobile use, I can't get it to do anything at all on my phone no matter how hard I try. It's set up exactly like the PC version. Which would be fine, were it actually done in a way that's usable. Not user friendly at all. Regretting this purchase big time, and so disappointed.

I was excited to be able to use this app on my phone when I am not at my PC, but it is waaaaay to finicky, has a ton of issues with navigation, and it runs at like 3 fps while drawing a 1 pixel line, panning the screen just right cuts off some screen options which requires a restart to fix. I would like to use this app more often if they'd just take the time to make a phone app, and not a Desktop Engine ran in the background on a phone.

Problems mentioned by other reviews seem to have been fixed. One issue, is that a cell phone has niether keyboard not a mice, so some functionality are not easy to access... The zooming is wonky, there is no dedicated up down)left right , there is no way to save in accessible folder of the phone. Edit: about 40 min later, the search function found the xcf file. I don't understand why it didn't find it at the first try. I wasn't able to expose as another file.

Unfortunately, this app is completely unusable for me. The controls are really bad. First, I cannot see them enough to use them unless I zoom in and out. I'd be willing to do that but I simply can't draw in this app. If I make a long stroke it starts trying to pan the screen and all I get is a big mess. There are also tool popups constantly in my way. The program itself is good, I've used it on PC, but it needs an interface overhaul to work on mobile.
