Real Experience Using "YNAB"

Application Scenarios

When I first started using YNAB, I was overwhelmed by my finances. I had student loans, credit card debt, and a desire to save for a new car. I decided to use YNAB to tackle my financial chaos. Every month, I would sit down with my laptop and input my income, then allocate funds to various categories. For example, I would set aside money for my student loan payment, groceries, and a small amount for entertainment. This process transformed my financial habits. I began to see where my money was going and made conscious decisions about my spending. On weekends, I would check my budget before going out, ensuring I stayed within my limits.

User Experience

The user interface of YNAB is clean and intuitive. Upon logging in, I’m greeted with a dashboard that displays my budget at a glance. The workflow is straightforward; I can easily add transactions, adjust categories, and view my spending trends. The app’s performance is smooth, with minimal lag, even when syncing with my bank accounts. I appreciate the color-coded categories that visually represent my spending habits, making it easy to identify areas where I can cut back. Overall, using YNAB has been a positive experience. I feel empowered and in control of my finances, which has significantly reduced my stress levels.

Pricing

YNAB operates on a subscription model, costing $14.99 per month or $98.99 for an annual subscription. While some may find this a bit steep, I believe the value it provides is worth every penny. The app offers a 34-day free trial, allowing users to explore its features without any financial commitment. This trial period was crucial for me, as it gave me the chance to see how YNAB could change my financial habits before making a purchase.

Updates & Support

YNAB is committed to continuous improvement, regularly rolling out updates that enhance functionality and user experience. Their customer support is also commendable; I reached out with a question about syncing my bank account, and I received a prompt and helpful response. Additionally, YNAB has an active community forum where users can share tips and ask questions, making it easy to find support and learn from others’ experiences.

Security & Privacy Review

As an American user, security and privacy are paramount when it comes to financial apps. YNAB is available on both the App Store and Google Play, ensuring that it meets the security standards set by these platforms. When registering, I was required to provide basic personal information, such as my name and email address, but I appreciated that YNAB does not require sensitive information like my Social Security number.

Importantly, YNAB does not display ads or engage in tracking behavior that compromises user privacy. The app uses bank-level encryption to protect my financial data, giving me peace of mind as I manage my budget. Overall, I feel secure using YNAB, knowing that my financial information is safeguarded while I work towards my budgeting goals.

it is definitely a learning curve, I feel like if there were tutorial videos to walk you through how to use the app it would be easier for alot more people. I worked in accounting so I was able to figure it out pretty quick because their setup reminded me of Quickbooks. I manually add in income & our bills & our purchases ect. I havent tried adding my bank just because I prefer to enter them myself. I do love this app it has helped me keep track of what we are spending our money on & budgeting.

I'm updating my review once again. previously it went from 5 stars to 2 stars. We are now unfortunately down to 1 star. My last review mentioned the home page feeling like an ad even though this is a paid service and there are no tiers in aware of. The team responded telling me that was educational content and not ads. This morning as I logged in to start budgeting I had an actual pop up ad to order their new book. I guess the price increases were not enough, ads are now in the platform too.

This app is incredible. Its honestly a slightly bigger learning curve than other apps, simply because the concept of assigning money is a bit non-intuitive, but once you get the hang of it its amazing! This really works as advertised. It really does make you feel less guilty about spending, and Im saving a lot more money now! I will be honest I used ChatGPT for 1 month to guide me through how to use YNAB, because I didnt get it at first, but after that its been really smooth.

paid for the subscription so I could link my accounts automatically, but they rarely / never work. Im constantly resetting them or adding transactions manually. I want to like it but overall its very frustrating. I reached out via the live chat and the customer service rep said I'd just have to enter my bank transactions manually. Then I had a one on one consult, which was very helpful with learning some of the ins and outs. but the bank connections still don't work at all.

Not very automatic. I read that this was a great app for bi-weekly budgets, from multiple forums and reviews. With that I expected that I could put in my pay dates, and my monthly bills, and it would automatically allocate my bills for that pay period. It does now. It still does it for the month and you constantly have to manual make adjustments and assign transactions. There's hardly any automation for a biweekly budget.
