4.7 23andMe - DNA Testing is not just a service; it's a gateway to understanding your genetic makeup and ancestry. Here are some of the standout features that make this app a must-try for anyone curious about their roots or health:
Using the 23andMe app has become a part of my routine, especially during family gatherings. I often find myself sharing my ancestry results with relatives, sparking conversations about our family history. Just last month, at a family reunion, I used the app to show my cousins our shared DNA connections, which led to a fascinating discussion about our great-grandparents. Additionally, I’ve used the health reports to educate myself about potential genetic risks, which has been particularly useful during my annual health check-ups.
The user interface of the 23andMe app is sleek and intuitive. Upon opening the app, I was greeted with a clean dashboard that made navigation a breeze. The workflow from submitting my sample to receiving results was seamless; I appreciated the regular updates on the status of my sample. Once my results were in, the app presented them in an engaging format, complete with colorful charts and easy-to-understand explanations. Overall, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive, as the app not only delivers valuable information but does so in a way that feels personal and engaging.
23andMe offers a couple of pricing tiers, which I found to be quite reasonable considering the depth of information provided. The Ancestry Service starts at around $99, while the Health + Ancestry Service is priced at approximately $199. I opted for the Health + Ancestry package, and I believe the investment was worth every penny, given the insights I gained about my health and heritage.
The app is regularly updated, which keeps the features fresh and the user experience smooth. I’ve noticed improvements in the interface and additional features being rolled out over time. Customer support is also commendable; I had a question regarding my health report, and the response from their support team was prompt and helpful. It’s reassuring to know that assistance is readily available when needed.
As an American user, security and privacy are paramount when it comes to sharing personal genetic information. 23andMe is available on both the App Store and Google Play, which adds a layer of credibility. During the registration process, I was required to provide basic personal information, but I appreciated the transparency regarding how my data would be used. The app does not bombard users with ads, which is a relief, and I found no intrusive tracking behavior while using it. 23andMe emphasizes user control over data sharing, allowing me to opt-in or out of research studies, which is a significant plus for privacy-conscious individuals. Overall, I feel secure using the app, knowing that my genetic data is handled with care and respect.

The app's a mess, difficult to navigate through different tiers of membership features. The more features they add, the more annoying it becomes to navigate. It's also very visually overwhelmingly busy. Impossible to see your pie chart full screen, it's only a tiny frame around your profile photo. They also try to minimize the amount of indigenous American DNA compared to Ancestrycom, according to them I'm 7% MORE than 23&Me recognizes. I can understand 1 or 2% difference, but 7% is ridiculous.

Great app with intuitive menus, and an overall easy to understand process. They will continuously update health information as the technology they use to analyze genetics gets better, without charging you extra (some say there's a subscription, but I don't see it). Great investment and I could not suggest an improvemt if I tried. Granted, it'd be nice if the price was lower so that more people have access to this information, however I feel the price is more than justified for what you receive.

It's incredibly frustrating to try and cancel membership, and now that it automatically renewed (I thought I had cancelled) without notice, I can't get a refund, and customer service is impossible to find. When you go to help and try to find how to cancel your membership, the instructions are wrong. You have to go to the menu, go to settings, go to manage payments, and under THAT menu is a tab to cancel membership. I am not happy with this service at all.

When trying to cancel my membership, coincidentally the "keep" selection would always work but the "cancel" would not. I have discovered that the specific ancestry data these sites give based on DNA are "scientifically impossible and inaccurate;" nothing more than "formulated guesses." Something they go through great lengths to advertise as the opposite. Also making sure to keep the 'guessing' part of the information hidden in the fine print, then calling it an "art" when called out.

Although I had to redo the test, I was sent a new one for free! The waiting game was the worst part. In the end...so much information. A lot of info was so interesting! The health risks were a big factor for me too. Variants of certain genes are critical for early detection and elimination. The factoids about earwax, bitter taste, widows peaks and physical features were really fun. I get updates often, the more info 23&Me gets from the public the more I get too!! Love it! I recommend to all!
