Microsoft Planner is a task management application designed to help teams organize, assign, and track work visually. Integrated within the Microsoft 365 suite, it offers a user-friendly interface for creating plans, setting deadlines, and collaborating on projects. With features like task boards, charts, and file sharing, Planner enhances productivity and ensures that team members stay aligned on goals and responsibilities, making it an essential tool for effective project management.

Features & Highlights

Microsoft Planner is a powerful project management tool that seamlessly integrates with the Microsoft 365 suite, making it an excellent choice for teams looking to enhance their productivity. Here are some of its standout features:

  • Task Management: Create, assign, and track tasks effortlessly. For instance, in a marketing team, I can assign tasks to team members for a product launch, ensuring everyone knows their responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Visual Boards: Utilize Kanban-style boards to visualize project progress. I often use this feature to move tasks from "To Do" to "In Progress" and finally to "Completed," providing a clear overview of our workflow.
  • Collaboration Tools: Share files and communicate directly within tasks. During a recent project, I attached relevant documents to specific tasks, allowing my team to access everything they needed without switching between apps.
  • Integration with Microsoft 365: Sync with other Microsoft apps like Teams and Outlook. I frequently receive task notifications in Teams, which helps me stay on top of my responsibilities without missing a beat.
  • Customizable Labels and Filters: Organize tasks with color-coded labels and filters. This feature is particularly useful when managing multiple projects simultaneously, as I can quickly identify tasks by priority or project type.

Real Experience Using "Microsoft Planner"

Application Scenarios

As a project manager in a mid-sized tech company, I rely heavily on Microsoft Planner for various tasks. One of the most significant scenarios is during our quarterly product development cycles. I create a new plan for each product, breaking down the entire process into manageable tasks. Each team member is assigned specific responsibilities, and I can easily track progress through the visual boards. Additionally, I use Planner for organizing team meetings, where I can outline agenda items and assign follow-up tasks directly after discussions.

User Experience

The user interface of Microsoft Planner is intuitive and user-friendly. Upon logging in, I am greeted with a clean dashboard that displays all my plans at a glance. The drag-and-drop functionality for moving tasks between different stages is particularly satisfying and enhances my workflow. I appreciate how quickly I can create new tasks and assign them to team members. The performance is smooth, with minimal lag, even when I have multiple tasks and plans open. Overall, my experience has been positive; the app has significantly improved my team's collaboration and productivity.

Pricing

Microsoft Planner is included with Microsoft 365 subscriptions, which start at a reasonable price for businesses. This means that if your organization already uses Microsoft 365, you can access Planner without any additional costs. The value it provides in terms of project management and team collaboration makes it a worthwhile investment for any team looking to streamline their processes.

Updates & Support

Microsoft regularly updates Planner, introducing new features and enhancements based on user feedback. I’ve noticed improvements in the integration with other Microsoft apps, which has made my workflow even smoother. The support options are robust, with a comprehensive help center and community forums where users can share tips and troubleshoot issues. I’ve found the support team responsive and helpful whenever I’ve had questions.

Security & Privacy Review

As an American user, security and privacy are paramount when using any app, and Microsoft Planner does not disappoint. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, ensuring that it meets the necessary security standards for mobile applications. When registering, I was required to provide basic personal information, which is standard for most productivity apps. However, I appreciate that Microsoft has a clear privacy policy outlining how my data is used and protected.

Importantly, Microsoft Planner does not display ads, which is a significant plus for me. I dislike apps that track my behavior for advertising purposes, and I feel secure knowing that my data is not being sold to third parties. Overall, I feel confident using Microsoft Planner, knowing that my information is safeguarded and that I can focus on my work without privacy concerns.

I believe there are some other apps that work better than this. However, this is Microsoft we are talking about. The app itself is alright, just alright. We use it for every day project tracking. The schedule isn't syncing up properly with Outlook Calendar. The interface is clean, but could be more comprehensive. First time users often have a hard time finding the plans they're involved with, and creating a blank one instead...

The UI is not totally intuitive or fluid and the lack of a dark mode is always a negative. Integration across devices and with Teams works well (but could still be more seamless with the latter). Correspondingly, the lack of a desktop app is a definite shortcoming: I often have many tabs open in my browser and lose track of one or another.

The app barely functions. Good luck actually using it (every time I click on a tasks I'm booted to the hub so it is literally completely not useable) and planner sucks on 365 mobile too so I can't work on my lists unless I open my laptop. When I first installed it did work but the app is not so awesome. No filters and can't edit the recurring info fully so there has always been issues with app even when I could get it to function.

For managing projects and keeping tabs on tasks, this app does just that. I was looking for an easy to use project management software that worked on my phone and desktop. This being from Microsoft, I was able to quickly link up my account and get to work. Even better it's looks good on my Samsung Z Fold4. You can assign tasks to individuals, assign color categories/labels and set a task to be reoccurring. I do appreciate the notes areas where documents can be attached or websites added.

some comments are no longer visible. if a user sends a comment in browser it saves it as task chat which is not available in app or on teams it's buggy as he'll and doesnt save most edits and comments it's Microsoft... speaks for itself
