Procreate is a powerful digital painting app designed for artists and illustrators, available exclusively on iOS devices. With an intuitive interface and a wide range of brushes, tools, and features, it allows users to create stunning artwork with ease. Procreate supports high-resolution canvases and offers advanced layering options, making it suitable for both beginners and professionals. Its seamless integration with the Apple Pencil enhances the drawing experience, providing precision and control for every stroke.

Features & Highlights

Procreate is a powerhouse of creativity, designed specifically for artists and illustrators who want to unleash their imagination on the iPad. With a plethora of features that cater to both beginners and seasoned professionals, Procreate stands out as a must-have app for digital art enthusiasts. Here are some of its core features:

  • Brush Customization: Procreate offers an extensive library of brushes, and the ability to create your own. This feature allows artists to tailor their tools to fit their unique style. For instance, I often create custom brushes for watercolor effects, which gives my digital paintings a more organic feel.
  • High-Resolution Canvases: The app supports canvases up to 16k by 4k, enabling artists to create detailed artwork without compromising quality. I recently worked on a large-scale mural design, and the high-resolution capability allowed me to zoom in and refine intricate details without any pixelation.
  • Animation Assist: This feature allows users to create simple animations with ease. I used it to animate a short character sketch, and the intuitive timeline made the process enjoyable and straightforward, even for someone new to animation.
  • Intuitive Interface: Procreate’s user-friendly interface makes it easy to navigate through tools and features. I appreciate how quickly I can switch between brushes and colors, which is essential when I’m in the flow of creating.
  • Time-lapse Recording: Procreate automatically records your drawing process, allowing you to share your creative journey. I love sharing my time-lapse videos on social media, showcasing the evolution of my artwork from start to finish.

Real Experience Using "Procreate"

Application Scenarios

As a freelance illustrator, I find myself using Procreate in various scenarios throughout my day. Whether I’m sketching ideas for a client project or doodling for fun during my downtime, the app is always within reach. One of my favorite uses is during my morning coffee ritual; I often sit at my kitchen table, iPad in hand, and sketch out concepts for upcoming projects. The portability of the iPad means I can work anywhere, from a cozy café to a park bench, making it easy to capture inspiration as it strikes.

User Experience

The user interface of Procreate is one of its standout features. Upon opening the app, I’m greeted with a clean and organized layout that makes it easy to dive right into my work. The toolbar is intuitive, with all the essential tools readily accessible. I particularly enjoy the gesture controls, which allow me to quickly undo or redo actions with a simple swipe. The performance is stellar; I’ve never experienced lag, even when working on complex pieces with multiple layers. Overall, using Procreate feels like an extension of my creativity, allowing me to focus on my art without being bogged down by technical issues.

Pricing

Procreate is available for a one-time purchase of $9.99 on the App Store, which I find to be incredibly reasonable considering the wealth of features it offers. Unlike many subscription-based apps, this one-time fee grants you access to all the tools and updates, making it a cost-effective choice for artists who want to invest in their craft without ongoing expenses.

Updates & Support

The developers of Procreate are committed to continuous improvement, regularly releasing updates that enhance functionality and introduce new features. I’ve seen significant enhancements over the years, including new brushes and tools that keep the app fresh and exciting. Additionally, the support community is robust, with plenty of tutorials and forums available for users to seek help or share tips. I’ve found the Procreate community to be incredibly supportive, which adds to the overall experience of using the app.

Security & Privacy Review

When it comes to security and privacy, Procreate takes user concerns seriously. The app is available exclusively on the App Store, which means it adheres to Apple’s strict privacy guidelines. There’s no requirement for personal data registration, allowing users to dive into their creative endeavors without the worry of sharing sensitive information. Furthermore, Procreate does not include ads or tracking behavior, which is a significant plus for users who value their privacy. This commitment to user security makes Procreate a trustworthy choice for artists looking to create without compromise.

At first this app seemed really good, I've had other apps where if you don't pay for premium, your experience sucks. This one wasn't as bad. Then in the middle of a project it started to desaturate the first strokes I made. White turned into a grey, black into a slightly darker grey. I had to go over those sections again to give them back their color and then it kept happening. On another note, one of the only free tools you can use, fill, doesn't work most of the time. It just covers everything

There are many options for pens, but if you don't have premium you can only have 3 layers, which is very low. There aren't many ads, only a occasional ad about premium that you can easily tap off of. there is also eraser options. I do wish there was a time lapse option however, because I post time lapses of things I draw. overall, a good app. I would recommend!

good drawing app! i find the variety of brushes not too limited but not too wide either, and incase you find the brushes too minimal you can always get more from the community! i also really really like how you can add more than 1 reference!! very helpful there infinite painter.. the tools there are easy to understand and the software is very like, less complicated? idk. but good app anyways!

I like the idea of the app, but it keeps kicking me out. I've lost so many drawings that took me hours to make because it kicked me out after filling the entire thing black. If you choose to use this app, beware. You better have absolutely everything backed up so it doesn't ruin your process. I had good wifi, use everything as I should, work slowly, and it still kicks me out at random.

It's a pretty good basic drawing app, especially for beginners. something that I've noticed, though, is that not all the brushes show up even though they are part of the app for free. Along with that, my art app states that all my work is from 1969, which is definitely NOT the case. That bit is actually kinda humorous, and it doesn't bother me much, but I wish that all the brushes that are supposed to work actually did. overall, it's not bad. edit: The app is constantly crashing.
