Real Experience Using "Transit • Subway & Bus Times"

Application Scenarios

As a daily commuter in a bustling city, I rely heavily on public transportation. My mornings typically start with a quick check of the "Transit" app to see when the next bus is arriving. On a particularly hectic Tuesday, I had a meeting scheduled across town. I opened the app, and it suggested a combination of subway and a short walk. I followed the app’s guidance, and it led me to a nearby subway station just in time to catch the train. The real-time updates kept me informed about any delays, allowing me to adjust my plans on the fly.

User Experience

The user interface of "Transit" is sleek and modern, making it easy to navigate even for those who aren’t tech-savvy. The home screen displays my favorite routes and nearby transit options, which I find incredibly convenient. The app’s performance is impressive; it loads quickly and updates in real-time without lag. I particularly appreciate the map feature, which visually shows my route and any potential obstacles. I really loved this app until the most recent update, which completely changed the ui and some of the functions. With the new update, it's harder for me to tell which bus I am taking and when it will arrive. While I'm on the bus, the app no longer shows me all the stops on the route. It does not show me the full route on screen, and it keeps zooming in to the bus no matter what I do, so I cannot see how close I am to my destination. The notifications now alert me after my stop and not before it.

Could be great, but frustrating. I installed this app primarily for the subway time widgets, but they work at best 10% of the time. Most of the time, they are simply a grey block. Often, they are hours out of date. And it's not clear what it's choosing to show. I also wanted to contribute to their "Go" location tracking, but it's not designed for the NY subway. You have to follow their exact directions, you can't get on an early train, nor can you help if you are already on a train.

Constantly have to force stop when, after reaching one's destination, the app won't work correctly when attempting to connect to an adjoining route - it basically has to be reset (via force stop) to restore its normal functionality. Another bug issue is that you can only change the app icon color a few times before it "locks" and it can no longer be changed without uninstalling / reinstalling, which afterwards warns you you'll have to contact them if you uninstall / reinstall again. What a mess.

The amount you have to pay for other lines (and the fact that you do AT ALL) really ticks me off. What turns me off about this app is how it hangs and crashes 85% of the time and I'm *CONSTANTLY* Force Stopping it. I hate NJ Transit's app, but at least it doesn't keep freezing 🤷‍♀️ If I have to keep clearing Cache and Data, then it's really a piss-poor app. No other app requires clearing Data and Cache multiple times.

I'm directionally challenged. I really wish they had an arrow for the dot on the map. Other than that one complaint, it's a really good and reliable way to see bus routes and where they are in real time. I don't use the navigation tool because it seems a little confusing, so I personally stick with Google Maps. Just make sure Google maps time matches with Transit app's time. Where I live, Google Maps is a little late by a few minutes.
