Features & Highlights

  • Smart Home Integration: Nest seamlessly connects with various smart home devices, allowing you to control everything from your thermostat to your security cameras in one place. For instance, I can adjust my thermostat while I’m away from home, ensuring that I return to a comfortable environment without wasting energy.
  • Energy Reports: The app provides detailed energy usage reports, helping you understand your consumption patterns. I was surprised to see how much energy my heating system used during the winter months, prompting me to make adjustments that saved me money on my utility bills.
  • Remote Monitoring: With Nest, I can monitor my home in real-time, no matter where I am. One evening, while out for dinner, I received an alert about unusual activity detected by my security camera, allowing me to check in and ensure everything was safe.
  • Custom Alerts: The app allows you to set personalized alerts for various scenarios, such as when the temperature drops below a certain level. I set up alerts for my elderly parents’ home, ensuring I’m notified if their heating system fails during a cold snap.
  • User-Friendly Interface: The app boasts an intuitive design that makes navigation a breeze. I appreciate how easy it is to switch between different devices and settings, making my smart home management feel effortless.

Real Experience Using "Nest"

Application Scenarios

As a busy professional, I often find myself juggling multiple responsibilities, and that’s where the Nest app truly shines. One of my favorite scenarios is when I leave for work in the morning. I can quickly adjust my thermostat to save energy while I’m away, ensuring that I don’t come home to an empty house that’s been heating or cooling unnecessarily. Additionally, I have a Nest security camera positioned at my front door. Whenever I receive a package, I can check the live feed to ensure it’s delivered safely, giving me peace of mind while I’m at work. Another scenario is during family gatherings. I often host friends and relatives, and the Nest app allows me to adjust the temperature and lighting from my phone, creating a comfortable atmosphere without having to leave the conversation. It’s these little conveniences that make the app an integral part of my daily life.

User Experience

Navigating the Nest app is a delightful experience. The user interface is clean and intuitive, making it easy to find what I need without feeling overwhelmed. The dashboard presents all my connected devices at a glance, and I can quickly switch between them with just a few taps. The performance of the app is impressive; it loads quickly, and I’ve never experienced any lag when accessing my devices. Setting up new devices is straightforward, with step-by-step instructions that guide you through the process. I particularly enjoy the energy reports, which are visually appealing and easy to understand. Overall, using the Nest app feels seamless, and I appreciate how it enhances my smart home experience.

Pricing

Nest offers a variety of products at different price points, making it accessible for various budgets. The app itself is free to download and use, but the cost of the devices can add up. For instance, a Nest thermostat typically retails for around $249, while security cameras can range from $199 to $399 depending on the model. While the initial investment may seem steep, the long-term savings on energy bills and the added security make it worthwhile.

Updates & Support

Nest frequently updates its app to enhance functionality and security, which I appreciate as a user. The updates are usually seamless, and I’ve noticed improvements in performance and new features being added regularly. Customer support is also commendable; I once had a question about setting up a new device, and their support team was responsive and helpful. They offer various channels for assistance, including live chat and email, making it easy to get the help I need.

Security & Privacy Review

As an American user, security and privacy are paramount when using smart home technology. The Nest app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, ensuring that it meets the necessary security standards for mobile applications. When registering for the app, I was required to provide basic personal information, such as my email address and home address. While I understand the need for this data to provide location-based services, I remain cautious about how my information is used. Nest has a clear privacy policy that outlines data usage, which I found reassuring. Importantly, the app does not bombard users with ads, which is a significant plus in my book. However, it does collect data for improving services and user experience, which is common among smart home applications. I appreciate that Nest is transparent about its tracking behavior, allowing users to make informed decisions about their privacy settings. Overall, I feel secure using the Nest app, knowing that my data is handled responsibly.

Presence sensing for home/away assist gets worse and worse. It used to turn the camera on, set the thermostat to eco, and undo that when one of us came home. Now we're lucky if it ever does it at all. The camera comes on when we leave most of the time, but it only turns off half of the time. Eco mode has to be done "manually." update 2+ years later: same. Eco mode changes itself more often now, but the camera does less, so it is about the same.

I only use this for the thermostat. It works more or less and I like the reporting, but the scheduling UI is terrible on mobile. i think it was designed for a browser. Its way too small and sensitive for the average mobile user. Initially 3 stars, but it has been this way for YEARS, so dropping to 2. Not interested in any other nest products if they can't get the simple ones right.

Learning mode does NOT work well! I have it set to 68 for heat, and it turns itself on and heats to 70. I'll turn it off at night because I don't like to be hot and I don't trust it to keep the right temp - and I'll STILL wake up to it running and heating my place to 70/71. I turned off learning mode since the previous owner said it caused nothing but problems, and it's STILL causing problems. I do love that I can adjust the temp from my phone, but I feel l have to fuss with it too much.

Owned for years and not a single improvement has ever been made. Same glitchy app it's been since day one. This company doesn't care. Bad UI, frequently disconnects from the internet, ridiculously poorly designed scheduling. "Learning thermostat" can't even follow a schedule properly. And now for LITERALLY no reason at all it keeps putting itself into eco mode and not heating my home unless I manually put it back to heating. If it wasn't so expensive I would've thrown it out years ago.

Nest works well with Google Home, but two things could improve. 1, give more notice BEFORE the monthly smoke alarm sound check, not after it happens. 2, give more time to tell the app that smoke is from cooking before sounding the alarm - 5 seconds isn't enough time to get the phone out of my pocket, open the app, and figure out how to say it's safe.
