4.4 As someone who travels frequently for work, I found italki to be an invaluable tool for learning languages on the go. For example, before a recent trip to Spain, I used the app to book several lessons with a Spanish tutor. Each session was focused on practical phrases and cultural nuances that I would encounter during my travels. Additionally, I often use italki to practice my Mandarin during my daily commute. The flexibility of scheduling lessons around my busy work life has made it easy to integrate language learning into my routine.
The user interface of italki is clean and intuitive, making navigation a breeze. Upon opening the app, I am greeted with a dashboard that displays my upcoming lessons, recommended tutors, and community posts. Booking a lesson is straightforward; I simply select a tutor, choose a time slot, and confirm my booking. The video call feature works seamlessly, allowing for smooth communication during lessons. After using the app for several months, I feel a sense of accomplishment as I track my progress and see tangible improvements in my language skills. The overall experience has been positive, and I appreciate the supportive community that italki fosters.
italki offers a flexible pricing model that caters to different budgets. You can find tutors with rates ranging from $10 to $50 per hour, depending on their experience and qualifications. Additionally, italki provides a pay-as-you-go system, so you only pay for the lessons you take. This flexibility allows me to manage my expenses while still receiving quality language instruction.
The italki team is proactive in providing updates and support. I’ve noticed regular improvements to the app, including new features and bug fixes that enhance the user experience. Whenever I have a question or encounter an issue, the customer support team is responsive and helpful, often resolving my concerns within a day. This level of support gives me confidence in the platform.
As an American user, I prioritize security and privacy when using apps like italki. The app is available on both the App Store and Google Play, ensuring that it meets the necessary security standards. When registering, I was required to provide basic personal information, such as my name and email address, but I appreciated that italki does not ask for excessive personal data. The app does not display intrusive ads, and I have not noticed any tracking behavior that compromises my privacy. Overall, I feel secure using italki, knowing that my information is handled responsibly.

Defaulted my time zone to a European time zone even though my phone settings are EST in the US. This caused me to miss my first lesson and was not an option to change during the initial setup. I'm out ten bucks and waiting on a refund. I will update if I receive it but so far out of the gate the app caused a glitch that cost me money. Be sure and check you're not defaulted to some wildly inaccurate time zone on setup. You have to go into the settings to find out how to change it.

Really tough finding teachers using the app. No way to filter out by tutors in my region. I live on the other side of the globe to Europe, and keep getting recommended teachers in European timezones. Also, despite them saying there are X hundred tutors, the list repeats after a few scrolls, so you end up seeing the same tutors over again. Lastly, there is no where to find your shortlisted tutors - what is the point of having the button if you can't use it.

the platform itself is amazing. my issue is solely with the website and app itself. it's buggy and not intuitive. I was just trying to purchase a lesson pack via PayPal and it kept accepting my card... but not actually processing the agreement. there are other times where I've tried to reschedule a lesson, confirmed that it was actually rescheduled, only to discover that it didn't go through on my teacher's end. really frustrating and it definitely makes me less inclined to use the service often

it's a good platform in general but learning a language means having conversations, and the platform now kills the lesson when the time ends, which is very frustrating. it really should be up to the teacher to end the lesson. maybe it was being abused somehow, I don't know, but it made lessons more annoying to have in the platform. before this change it was five stars.

It is incredibly misleading to pre-select a language, be required to pay for a subscription and learn that they're without available teachers and no disclaimers. This lack of transparency and poor communication is inexcusable for a language platform The support I experienced was unacceptable; it took over 45 minutes to receive a simple URL to cancel though Google Play when cancellation in the app did not work, with delays so long I had to check on the rep to make sure they hadn't disconnected.
