Application Scenarios

My journey with the PlantNet app began during a weekend hike in a local nature reserve. As I wandered through the trails, I stumbled upon a cluster of unfamiliar plants. This not only satisfied my curiosity but also enriched my hiking experience, allowing me to appreciate the biodiversity around me.

Another scenario occurred while I was tending to my home garden. I noticed a plant that had sprouted unexpectedly. Unsure if it was a weed or a flower, I used PlantNet to identify it. Awesome app, but identification of more obscure plants can be a bit tough because a. not all species are represented and b. the photos are user-submitted and community verified. For example, some photos seem to show different characteristics for the supposedly same plant, possibly because other users verified photos of multiple species that look alike as the same one. Still, it narrows things down surprisingly well, so it's a great starting point when used alongside personal research.

It's cool when it works, but a relative 80% of the time after I take a picture of the plant I want to identify, the app just restarts and takes me straight to feed instead of the identification page. I would have assumed I took a bad picture if it didnt work the first or second try, but I've been zooming in, physically getting closer to the plant, and it still resets by attempt #7. The lighting is pretty decent considering I' outside in the sunlight, so that definitely isnt why.

Predatory. Auto-renews for a full *yearly* subscription after the 1-week trial. Can't be canceled through the app itself. Can't be canceled through the Google play store phone app either. I had to get to a PC and dig to finally, actually cancel my subscription. Predatory practices should never be supported. Strongly recommend any other plant ID app but this one.

Was Great, Now Seldom Works Properly. It used to work for me almost every time. Now, however, about 75% of the time the screen that allows you to choose leaves, flowers, etc. doesn't come up & it goes to the main feed screen. I can sometimes get around this by taking a picture normally on my phone, then going into PlantNet and opening that photo from within. But this workaround is unacceptable. I don't what you all broke, but just go back to an early version. It worked!

I tried this app a couple of years ago and wrote a review about constant error messages and inability to identify plants. Plantnet responded that they "had some server issues yesterday that have been removed." That may be true but the issues were there before that day. Now, a couple of years later, I downloaded the app again. Same issues. On the rare occasion that it does finally identify a plant, trying to open the info on that plant causes it to freeze. It's useless.
